Starting in the fall of 1992, Campus Computing Sites and other services will be using uniqnames and passwords to identify users who want to log into various computer systems.
What is a uniqname?
A uniqname (pronounced "unique–name") is a unique identifier (ID) chosen by each user. This ID will be used at Campus Computing Sites to identify an individual as a current U-M student, faculty, staff or other legitimate user of site resources. An ID has an associated password.
What services use uniqnames?
In addition to Campus Computing Sites, the Institutional File System (IFS) and the Computer Aided Engineering Network (CAEN) are using uniqnames to identify authorized users. The IFS is a service that will soon provide you with storage space for your own personal files, minimizing the need to carry floppy disks. Other new services will soon be in place that will incorporate uniqnames to account for their usage, including c o l o r and high-speed printing services. Some new services will associate real dollars and personal information with your uniqname so it is important not to give others your password.
Users with CAEN-issued IDs should add @engin.umich.edu to their uniqnames. For example, if Jane was issued a uniqname of jane at CAEN, she would type jane@engin.umich.edu to authenticate.
Note: uniqnames are different from MTS UserIDs, which are required for using MTS services such as electronic mail and conferencing.
